Dissatisfaction with the government played a big role leading up to the revolution. The social conditions in France were extremely unequal and exploitive. The first two states were formed with the clergy and nobility and were the most privileged. The third estate was consisted of peasants and workers and they formed the majority of the population. The first to estates did not have to pay taxes to the state, but the third estate were burdened with tax payments.
Economic stability
In the 18th centaury, France was one of the richest countries but also had its economic problems. Many of the problems were caused by the actions of king Louis XVI. During his reign, the royal treasury became poor and empty because of the kings extravagant expenses and fighting so many wars. Although, the king was still collecting tax payments from the third estate it was not enough. Therefore, the Finance Minister of France made a policy of borrowing money to meet the expenditure of the royal court. France was then deeply in debt due to borrowing money.
Dissatisfaction In The Government
King Louis strongly believed his word was the law. The third estate was not happy with the government because they had no say, political and social rights in the government.
